10 STEPS TO GREATER SELF ESTEEM.

1. Low self esteem comes in many garbs.  Low self esteem creates a need to “fit in” and be popular, because needing others’ approval is a way of comforting yourself when you don’t have your own vote of approval. Being prepared to be different is evidence of a healthy self esteem.

2. You have low self esteem when you focus on what is wrong with you. For example, when you think people praise you so as to not hurt your feelings, or you question or interpret praise negatively.

3. Don’t let the past determine your future - low self esteem often germinates in early life experiences. Don’t promote the judgement of your contemporaries to an importance it doesn’t merit.

4. Don’t elevate the opinion of others above your own opinion. Additionally, don’t overlook that another’s evaluation of you may be distorted by a personal agenda, emotional difficulties or an attitude of competitiveness.

5. Don’t project your dislike of yourself onto others. Low self esteem means you believe others entertain  negative evaluations of you, which is unlikely, because they are probably occupied with what others think of them.

6. High self esteem means you trust yourself to risk failing, because to fail is not a reflection on your  worth but is regarded as a learning experience. Those with low self esteem hate making mistakes because it confirms their beliefs about themselves.

7. Competitiveness is often a camouflage for low self esteem, because the constant need to compare  implies a lack of acceptance of yourself as you are.

8. Celebrate your achievements; others certainly won’t recognize your achievements if you don’t. Surely, you have managed to avoid many of the problems others have not overcome.

9. Those with low self esteem don’t trust themselves. If the best prepared of us have our share of catastrophes why would you expect to be immunised from error.

10. Aim to achieve incremental improvements, each day. Self confidence comes from a feeling of being able to have some control over your circumstances, not that you are the best in the world. There is no greater achievement than an attempt to constantly improve.
